how much is an original 1950s king kong poster worth?

Hero From Yesterday
what are you talking about? King Kong came out on the 30s

the movie came out in 1932. Five figures easy, if you you have an original.

Hero is correct, "King Kong" was released in 1932 so any of the posters used to promote the film initially should be from that year as well. The movie was re-released for a theatrical run briefly, after the early television program "Shock Theater" made horror movies from the thirties and later fashionable again, so it was shown in some theaters in the fifties but I don't know if the posters used to promote the re-release were duplicates of the original or posters with a new design. If the posters for the re-release were different, they are probably of interest to collectors of King Kong material, of which there are more than a few. Any collectible is only worth what you can get someone to pay you for it, although there are some collectors guides that have baseline guides for any number of things (public libraries are good free sources for these books) and I imagine there is probably one which would include movie posters. Condition will be important, especially for a poster fifty (to possibly eighty-six years) old. Size is another consideration. In the thirties and forties it was not unusual to see movie posters that were composed of up to four "sheets" which made them quite large (a contemporary poster is roughly the size of a single sheet). Multiple-sheet posters and oddities like character cut outs used for advertising are worth more money to collectors than single sheet/standard posters. Be aware that the original advertising poster for King Kong was reproduced and sold in the thousands during the first great poster boom of the mid and late sixties, so make certain you know which version of the poster you have. My best advice is to check your local library to see if they have a collectors guide to movie collectables. You can also check Ebay and see if similiar posters have been auctioned and what the high bids were.

Movie posters are cool again
Stuff.co.nz (blog)
They are boring, generic and don't do what a poster should - offer a tantalising glimpse of mystery and excitement. But it wasn't always like this. In the 1950s and 60s, designers such as Saul Bass created striking, graphic posters like this: And in ...
