How much to replace ball joints in 1999 Tahoe?
I have a lifted (5")1999 Tahoe 4x4 that needs to replace the Lower ball joint on the driver side and the Upper ball joint on the passenger side. Approximately how much does this cost? Please give me a breakdown, I may just buy the parts myself and take it to a shop if its cheaper. Please note that the objective is to get it to driving condition and then sell it soon after.

Budget two hours of shop time ($70-$100 per hr) per side. Replace both upper and lower joints at the same time, do it once and do it right. You'll need a pickle fork, spring compressor, power drill, jack stands, a Saturday afternoon, some buddies to help you and a fair amount of patience. Air tools will be a big help if you own a compressor or know someone who does. Labor will cost more than the ball joints, you won't be saving anything by buying the parts then hiring a mechanic. What's more he won't guarantee the work because you bought the parts. They all roll that way.

Well ball joints aren't the easiest things to replace, unless you have the right tools. You can get jobber parts that will be alright ,but won't last like the GM ones. So the cost will be ! 1500.00 for the right ones and 500.00 for put in your self jobber.

You can estimate the cost here: Bringing your own parts to a garage is like bringing your own steak to a restaurant. Bad form. One of two things will happen, they will not guarantee the work or they'll toss you out on your ear laughing. Most likely the second one.

Just do all 4. Silly to do one on each side. But that your call. figure 400 a side. Do it yourself and save some cash. Or why not just sell it as is. U sure it just not the ball joint as well? 5" lift will tear the shi! out of the bearings so ball joints may be one issue, but id bet money once you get in there the bearings are shot. It not that bad of a job. You can get the loaner tool ball joint press from autozone free, pickle fork, basic hand tools and you can do it in about a half a day
