Today's Discussion

I have a central A/C with heat pump, what should the return size be?
I had Sears install a Heat Pump with A/C. They installed everything (vents, duct work, eletric, and breakers). The house had Electric heat in the ceiling, with controls in every room. The BTU on new a/c says 30,000 SEER 12. The unit is 8 years old. They put a 12*24 inch return on it. The filters are being pulled up and bending. I have to change the filter ever 3 weeks, because off the pull from the unit. I am having Sears come back out to look at the way the unit was installed. I would like to have more information about what should be in the house, so it is redone right. Is there away to figure this out? The house has 10 room (4 down, 6 up) 1800 sq feet. One more question the heat pump is in the attic and the duct work with the medal housing at the end is just sitting in place, not nailed in, I can take my hand with a little push with one finger and the medal housing goes back into the attic. Should I be able to do this? Should I be able to see up in the attic when I take the cover off the vents on my ceiling? Please help me understand so I know the redo on my costly unit is fixed right this time.

Your return air should be large enough so as not to restrict flow in any way. Standard return-duct sizes usually exceed 24 x 24, I have seen 24 x 36 returns on houses about your size quite commonly. If your filters are being distorted by suction, clearly the return is too small *UNLESS* the system was designed to pick up a certain amount of "make-up" air from the exterior - not common, but possible. So have that checked as well. Usually, well-installed duct systems are restrained at only one location, with either a flexible connection at the other end or sleeved so that they may expand and contract with use. Consider that if the same duct is to both heat and cool, the differential may be as much as 60 degrees F. at the extremes of summer and winter. So there will be considerable expansion and contraction. Good luck with it.
