Abstract painting?
I am out of school for the summer, and I'm gonna really start to concentrate on my art. What I usually do is a lot of blending and black and white drawings of flowers or people, and sometimes landscapes. I really want to get into abstract art, what are the main things to know about it? What should I get to start of? What do you think I should concentrate on when I start painting? Thank you so much!!!! Please answer if you are an artist and have been painting for a while, I would appreciate detailed answers. Thanks again! oh, also, what paints are the best? What company? And also what brushes?

Abstraction is such a broad area...it really depends on what you want to do... If you want to do something like Jackson Pollack...their thought was that everyone shares a finite set of emotions, so you paint with emotion and then the viewer will also feel something when looking at it...maybe even the same thing you were when you painted it... if you are familiar with painting, heck even if youre not, the fun can come from the experimentation... do a bit of research on abstract artists and check out some of the websites like wetcanvas.com (they have an area for abstracts) and see what other people are doing and what appeals to you... have fun and good luck...

You might try taking your drawings and altering them very subtly at first. Take a picture of a flower you drew and cut it up and re-arrange it in a seemingly random order. Collage is economical and teaches a lot about composition and how abstract forms work together within a picture. You may begin to "see" more abstractly if you start with familiar objects. Supplies depend on what you want to do. Acrylic or oil? Multi-media? Found art? Acrylic paint and medium will clean up with water, so if you're in a small studio environment (or your house) this may be appealing. When you get back to school, take the 2-D or intro design class. "Abstraction" is still very formal in many cases, so you need to know the visual vocabulary and practice your technique. You should know what rules you are trying to break, after all. Finally, go look at art. Look at as much art as you possibly can. You will see the myriad of approaches to making art and you will probably find something that speaks to you. If you live in an area where this is not possible or limited, use books or the internet. JSTOR is an excellent online resource, but you'll probably have to go to your school or public library. Read art and artist's blogs. Go meet artists and talk to them, we're generally a pretty good lot. Go to a quality art store in your area. They will have a wide range of good quality materials to fit your budget. Maybe start with canvas board instead of stretched canvas until you get your bearings. Good luck.
