Today's Discussion

any ideas on abstract paintings? i am a beginner, how do i start?
i love all the abstract paintings that are out now, but some of them are very expensive to buy. i know deep down that i could paint one myself, but so far i am only good at copying normal drawings. my husband has bought me some canvases, acrylic paints, brushes ect, but i am scared to start!! want to paint something that has logic but no meaning, i know that some abstracts look as if a monkey has painted them! but if there is imagination, then someone with imagination could see something in it. do i just grab my brushes and go for it!!!!

you want to paint something that has logic but no meaning...you do not know what you are talking about... Do you think jackson polack just tossed paint on a canvas or motherwell painted a red square just for the he*l of it...there were reasons for everything even though you do not seem to grasp that info when looking at these abstract paintings...read a book ...you just don't do it without a plan in mind or you are that monkey spreading paint on canvas. You want decoration then decorate but don't call yourself an artist if all you want is some color for over the sofa.

Go It is called "horror vacue" Fear of the emptiness. Just start with a color you like. ad some other color and see what happens. Forget about logic, trees or anything. Just try to work with the paint and ee what happens. Scrape smear smack it, turn it upside down. and most important. Have a good time and don't stress about it and you will make a great painting...maybe.. one day. Or maybe the first will be so impressive you never dare try again. Who knows.

Maybe you can get some ideas from me. Check out my art website. Treasurechestart.com By the way try starting out with a base color on your canvas then after that dries apply simple tape make any design you want. Paint over it , when dry pull the tape and wal-la, lol. Check the very last art on my website, titled London. You will see I used tape for that one. And remember have fun. You can never go wrong when painting. What you may not like of what you paint, there will always be somebody that does.

The greatest thing about abstract art is there is no wrong way to do it. My advice to you is to think about what colors you like, what shapes you like, and what subjects you like. You could go from a picture and completely distort it on your canvas. But above all, don't hesitate. Just go for it. Take out your paint and your canvas and just smear it on there. Your picture will develop itself. If you need something to inspire you, play some of your favorite music. And always remember that you can paint over it if you don't like it. :)

wow! you say it looks like a monkey painted some abstract painting but yet you cant think of what to paint??? hmmmm there is talent in all art- even when it "looks" easy, if you cant think of it then its not! ps- you can always paint over what you dont like- so brush away!!
