Today's Discussion

Fans of late 60s/early 70s hard rock, prog, and psych music...what do you think of this band?
Three piece rockers "Hard Meat" are what I'd consider lesser known, unless you're an old time record collector such as myself perhaps. Their sound was quite typical of the time, and incorporated a mix of electric and acoustic guitars...with some jamming on the longer cuts. One can hear influences of early Jethro Tull (minus the flute), Cream and even early Steve Miller Band (1968/69) here and there. So fans of those bands might enjoy Hard Meat. They recorded two albums for Warner Bros in 1969/70...self titled debut, and a follow-up titled "Through A Window". The band lineup consisted of two brothers; Mike Dolan (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, harmonica, lead vocals), and Steve Dolan (electric bass, string bass, acoustic guitar, vocals). Mick Carless played drums/percussion. Pete Westbrook (flute), Phil Jump (keyboards) also helped out on some of the sessions, but weren't actual band members. Anyways, here's a video I created/uploaded featuring a few of my favourite songs from both LP's. My video is quite simple production wise...with various images sourced from photos/scans of my original vinyl album, jackets/covers, labels, etc. I've also inserted some vintage live footage of the band performing, and tried to synch it the best I could. The video is 26 minutes long, so feel free to advance through the songs by clicking on the track listings individually with the comments section of the video Hard Meat - On The Road / Run Shaker Life / Free Wheel / I Want You... Lol...I asked this question which features a 26 minute video 6 mins ago, and 4 mins later somebody answers with "they're OK"...gotta love it :) Lol...for someone who wasn't overly thrilled with Hard Meat, you've certainly provided us with more than I care to read...skimming through was about all I had the patience for, sorry. You really need to look up the definition of "progressive rock". Long before the 70's bands; Yes, Gentle Giant, Greenslade, ELP, Camel and the lot, the term "progressive rock" was applied to band like Cream, Gravy Train, Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, The Gods, Tomorrow, Simon Dupree & The Big Sound, The Pretty Things", etc etc...and yes...Hard Meat. And as for "some Yes-Gentle Giant like band that you might have have missed"? I'm sure I could list dozens, if not hundreds :) Thanks for the in-depth personal analysis :)

My first impression — and I hate to ever have to say this about any great musicians — is that I am really not turning on to the music. To me, the compositions are not compelling enough to "pull me in," as it were. Before I get into a critique, I'd like to point out that part of the reason I'm not getting into it is based on expectations. The question asks for fans of progressive and psychedelic rock to give their thoughts; progressive rock is one genre (amongst many) about which I'm passionate. So, maybe I was hoping to find some Gentle-Giant-or-Yes-like band I'd somehow missed. Hard Meat, to me, doesn't seem to have much in common with these types of bands. Some things I do like about Hard Meat so far? Steve Dolan (bass) and Mick Carless (drums) can really lay down some grooves. Both have tremendous ability, and almost make the whole run of "Run Shaker Life" enjoyable. (Though, I'm sorry to say it's only "almost.") My main qualm is that there's not enough harmonic development to these examples. For me, they rely too much on their groove, not really going anywhere. It's extended-jam music, to be sure, but I think they could have given us at least something in the way of development and dynamics. Mike Dolan is a good enough guitarist, but from what I hear in these examples, he doesn't have the kind of musical vocabulary that allows guitarists like Hendrix or Clapton to keep listeners interested over the course of a two-minute-or-longer solo. He's not bad: probably better than many rock guitarists, technically speaking. It just feels limited, both rhythmically and harmonically (or, at least, too limited to keep going so long). He does grab you with his singing and lyrics, though. I think I would have come around to this band immediately if it focused on tighter, shorter songs, as opposed to these looser jams (this, coming from someone who counts among his favorite albums Tales from Topographic Oceans, the Yes double album that clocks in at about 80 minutes—yet contains only four tracks). But, as it stands, I'm finding myself waiting through the jams, hoping for a return to a verse or chorus. Having said all this, I'm not turned off by the band, so I'm not ready to give up on them. Some of my favorite bands struck my the wrong way on first listen, so maybe it will be the same with Hard Meat. After all, I started listening expecting something else. Now that I've got that out of my system, perhaps I can take them for what they really are on a second (or third) listen. Thank you for sharing!

A lot of progressing from the norm in those days Doc. Good sounding band, again I missed. We can't expect everybody to be a Jimi.
