I'd say if you're wanting to play general music, go for acoustic. Electric drum sets are usually associated with electronica music and music which needs electronic simple beats. You get more freedom to do as you want on an acoustic drum kit. Plus it's not pre-recorded.

This video helps making a decision between the two easier based on the differences.

Personally, I think there is no comparison. A traditional Acoustic kit has all the natural response and caters for infinite dynamic levels, and to me much more satisfying a play. An electric kit generally has less feel and an can have an element of latency which is not good for your playing. And the cheaper / moderately priced ones don't have much of a dynamic spectrum. Sound to me like a bad 1980's casio keyboard drum sound! Here are some pros and cons... Acoustic Pros... Great Feel (even a beginners kit) You can get a decent set up in half the price of a top of the range electric kit (which are the only ones worth taking seriously!) More satisfying to play Better sound Don't need to Plug them in! Cons... Are always loud (but then you can put silencers on them for practice) Are heavy to carry about (But come on, you wanna be a drummer right!) Electric Pros... Are essentially silent, you can wack in a pair of headphones and not p*** anyone off. Are moved around easily Cons... Are not the real thing, and the sound and feel will never match the real thing Affordable ones are tacky sounding and fast playing with the hihat / hihat pedal doesn't happen (at least not for me when trying one out). You need power and an amp! That said, if you are not sentimental and not that excited about the sensual dynamic range of a real set of drums, and space is an issue, an electric is probably worth considering. But for me, I love the drums, and settling for an electric would be like going out for a Posh Meal but ending up having a McDonalds; DISAPPOINTING Good luck...
