Today's Discussion

Do acoustic, electric and bass guitars have all the same fingerings for the notes?
My friend and I are planning on starting a band and she plays electric and I want to play bass. I was wondering if they both have the same fingerings for the notes. And there is an acoustic guitar that I might buy if it will help me learn how to play bass too. I know it sounds kinda dumb but do acoustic guitars, electric guitars and bass guitars have the same fingerings for the same notes?

The notes are in the same places yes, and the chords are the same.

Yes, the notes and the fingerings are the same. A four-string bass guitar has the same notes as the lowest (deepest) four strings on a guitar, only one octave (12 notes) below. This said, a guitar and a bass has two very different ways of being played and a different feel to them. The longer scale on a bass (longer string length and thus larger distance between the frets) is just one of these differences. More importantly is the way the bass lays the foundation and the groove together with the drums. As such they have different rhythmic feel than what guitars usually have most of the time. In short, they are played differently. To understand music theory, the notes, scales, structure of music, songs etc, playing guitar will be helpful as far as another instrument goes. However, playing a bass as opposed to a guitar often requires another mindset all together. But don't let any of this scare you - just dive right into it! We all learn as we go. Have fun and play it loud and proud :-)
