How do I get a black pen ink stain from a red Adidas cotton sweater to come off?

Try some hair spray.

I once spilled blue fountain pen ink all over a cotton pink top and found that soaking it in nail polish remover for about ten minutes and then hand washing with a little detergent did the job. Red makes me a bit skeptical about the result though because it's such a sensitive color and will rinse out in the most basic washing machine cycles and I'm not totally sure how nail polish remover will affect it but I don't know of any other method to get ink out of cotton.
