Today's Discussion

Is there such a product as a portable air conditioner that DOESN'T need a window to exhaust?
Our house was not built for air conditioners nor do we have the drop down windows in which to fit the 'window air conditioners' I purchased what I thought was a portable a/c but it still had a tube thing that had to go out a window to "exhaust" or something. Is there one that is truly portable and does not need a window or a pathway outside? I would be GRATEFUL Thanks!!!

If you can not pull heat out of the air. You can only remove the heat but you must dump it some place else. However you can buy a dehumidifier, that will remove the humidity from the air and make the room a little more bearable. Herb

Nope... An AC unit has to have some place to dump all the heat that it generates. If not it is basically just a dehumidifier. Now there are smaller two piece units that work more like a whole house unit in that the cooling coils and fan are inside and the compressor an its fan are outside. That way you're only having to run a small hole through the wall. For your portable unit, consider making a vent for it, like a dryer vent, it is simply a hole through the wall.

An air conditioner works by absorbing heat from the air on one side and transferring it to the air on the other side. The hot air then has to be blown away. There are different kinds of air conditioners, but they all work that same way.

No air conditioner is going to function without being able to dump the heat it removes from inside your house, somewhere else. The AC is a heat pump. You can't make heat go away, you have to put it somewhere where you don't mind it being there. In your case, that means outside. If you can't dump it through a window, your options are very limited indeed. If your windows are casement type - crank out windows - then you may be able to answer your needs with a casement type window AC. They cost more and there aren't as many options, but the alternative is installing new windows just to have AC. There are such things as "mini-split" AC systems, which will require cutting through the wall to install the refrigerant lines, but they don't need a window. And the cut through the wall is very small, like the diameter of a Coke can. Half the noise-making parts are outside so they generally aren't as rackety as a window unit. They're more expensive than any window unit, but they're also generally a lot more efficient, and they can even be had as heat pump units, so they might help you out in the winter, too. Stop buying equipment until you've read up on the stuff. Your portable AC unit is now a boat anchor you have to try to figure out what you want to do with. Talk to some knowledgeable AC people in your area, you'll save money in the long run.

Funny you should ask this because I have been through hell and back for the past week doing my research about such a thing. I understand it a lot clearly now. I agree with some of the other answers, basically the AC sucks all the hot air from the room and blows it outside. If you were to put the AC without a window, it's going to collect the hot air and instead of depositing it outside, it will shoot right back in your room making the room even HOTTER than what you started off with. I too was looking at those portable AC's but it comes with a hose type thing and I can't even use that one because it's a windowless room here and cutting a small hole in the wall to vent out through the hose is not an option right now. So I guess we're shit out of luck haha

Yes there is I have had in the within last 5 years it just blows cold air You have to fill the reservoir with cold water and put a ice pack in Cools the room down a treat. Enquire at an electrical showroom google portable air conditioners there's quite a few if you look

You do need to vent the hot air somewhere, but you neccessarily have to have it near a window or the outside. For example, you can vent the hot air out into the attic portion between your ceiling and the roof, or you can vent it out the doorway of whichever room you are currently in, to a different room. So, if neither a windor or the ceiling was an option but you needed to sleep with a portable AC, you could put the vent pipe out your bedroom door and close the door. It would blow hot air out into the rest of your house, but at least your bedroom would be cool while you slept.
