Today's Discussion

Do you think airguns should be banned or controlled in the UK.?
Currently ANYONE over 17 years of age (Going up to 18 years of age in October 2007) can buy an airgun in the UK. What do you think of this.

Hitler was a strong proponent of gun control too. Didn't work there either, especially for the Jewish people. Air guns hardly seem a threat to anyone, or is that your government just wants to control or restrict another portion of your life? Are cricket bats next?

I went to a store today and bought a knife block. It had five knives all of which would kill a human being easily, painfully and messily. I also drive a car. It is relatively small but big enough to mow down a bunch of people at a bus stop if they annoyed me enough. I don't know...I haven't tried it...but my guess is I could go on line right now and find out how to make a bomb of some kind. I could also go to my DVD store and get all sorts of ideas about what to do with those bombs. Do I think airguns should be controlled?...to what point?

I had my first gun given to me on my seventh birthday. Not an air gun but a .410 shotgun. I was taught responsibility and also the proper handling of a weapon. That experience of handling guns of all types from then onwards served me well when I joined the British special forces. What I am getting at is that any weapon and I include air weapons, can be character building . It is not the guns that do the damage it is the hands they are put into. I do not agree with all this banning and regulation. People must learn to take responsibility for their own actions. In any case real guns are easily available , and they are banned.

They banned them in Australia. But people will just find other ways to be sadistic and cruel so it never changed a thing. They'll eventually ban them with or without your permission. It just takes on incident to get in the news and then it happens.

What, you mean like real guns are? That works well, don't you think? Nobody ever gets shot in the UK. The people for whom shooting is a sport are not the ones going around taking pot-shots from their windows. By that logic, we should also ban knives, including ANY kitchen utensil, baseball bats, cricket bats, snooker cues, bricks.... I could go on. Why not just admit to ourselves that the softly softly approach to crime is failing miserably, and allow the police to shoot neds / chavs?

Original question, without the supplement was good enough! Yes.

Not especially. I have never heard of a freak airgunning accident where a 17 went out and callously mowed down a collection of tin cans. However I think that the amount of weapons available are too liberal.

I don't believe air guns should be banned/controlled any more than they are already. To raise a very basic point, if a gun doesn't have someone to shoot it, can it really hurt anyone? No. A gun is only dangerous when it is in the wrong hands. If we ban something, we are saying the problem is with the item itself, not the person holding it (in the case of the gun). I am an advocate of 'personal responsibility'. Why should those who are responsible gun owners suffer because of a few idiots/evil people who misue them? We should not ban them but SEVERELY punish those who do misue them.

I think they should be controlled or banned. Do you really trust kids with those things? And with all the violence on TV!
