how does a portable (gas powered) air compressor work?
i want to build a portable gas powered air compressor ( i have already buildt a 60g 110v air compressor for home that works just fine no problems). on regular compressor you plug them inick, turn on the switch and thats it. compressor starts shuts off at regulated psi. while using compressor, pump and starter cuts in at regulated psi. by itself repetes over to keep regulated psi in tank. well if tou have to pull a draw string to start a gas powered compressor and it starts compressing air. what happens when it reaches desired psi or when pressure drops and has to fill up again. do i have to manually start this thing every timepsi gets psi gets low ? or how does it start again without me having to manualy start it? or does it stay running all the time? do i need any special or different valves or something? or just HOW DOES IT WORK?

ehh... i'd just buy one... you might blow up something... like yourself trying to do all that..

it should start automatically when you reach your low psi set point

Not sure what the industry standard is but if you are using a positive displacement compressor you either have to recycle the gas or vent it to the atmosphere. If recycling the gas then once the discharge pressure has reached its setpoint a recycle valve opens recycling gas back to the suction of the compressor, you will need an after-cooler to cool the gas prior to entering the suction or the compressor will overheat on discharge temp and/or oil temp causing damage to the internals. If you bypass the gas to atmosphere you will need a regulator and a good muffler, its going to be noisy. Ive never seen a gas air compressor turn on and off depending on pressure, maybe they disengage the compressor with a clutch but Im not sure.
