How to Find and Maintain an Antique Crystal Chandelier

antique crystal chandelier

When looking for an antique crystal chandelier it is very important to have all of the facts. Not everyone is honest and can, therefore, give you the false impression that you are about to purchase something that you are not.

It is good to know what you are looking for in an antique crystal chandelier. There are several guides that you can purchase on this topic, that go into great detail about the characteristics that you should look for.

However, if you are still unsure, it is wise to enlist the services of an appraiser. An appraiser would have a well trained eye for the little details that will validate the authenticity of the antique crystal chandelier.

First off, in order for anything to be considered "antique", it has to be at least on hundred years old and can be dated back as far as the 1600's. So, the antique crystal chandeliers that have been preserved well enough to still be functional will look aged.

Also, antique crystal chandelier were only made from bronze, brass and crystal, and even though all the antique chandeliers fuel sources were usually candles or kerosene, some have been wired to use electric.

Once you have found your treasure, you will want to maintain its beauty, however, it is recommended that you do not try and clean it on your own. Instead, it should be taken to an antique restoration specialist instead.

Today's Discussion

Where can I buy a crystal chandelier that uses candles instead of electricity?
I love it if I could have links - I'd like to shop online. Doesn't matter if it's antique or new, as long as the price isn't outrageous.

What a sooty mess that thing would be to clean every time you fired it up..

I saw an ad in Popular Science for chandeliers that use candles once a couple of years ago. The only other place I remember seeing them was in England.

You can 'unwire' a chandelier. For what you are interested in doing you need to find something with the candle cups big enough to hold a candle. Be careful though, it may be too close to the ceiling for you to light them. www.illusions.com has a candlelier, but its not crystal. If you just like the look, try an led candle that flickers instead of a wax one, at www.inspiredlighting.com I used the big ones on my coffee table because I was afraid of my grandkids getting burned. They are surprisingly realistic.
