Some people have antique style engagement rings that are handed down through the generations.  For others though, this is not a tradition they use.

However, you may want to be the generation that starts this but you may also feel that you are not in a position to buy a genuine antique ring.

After all, this sort of tradition is not about the actual ring but more about the fact that this is a family piece of jewelry.

There is a wealth of new rings that are styled to look like antique engagement rings, and are in many cases much more affordable than having a genuine old antique ring.

That is not to say that these rings are inferior in anyway, just that they are made new but have excellent craftsmanship.

Maybe you are looking for a plain band set with just one stone as is traditional or maybe you would prefer to have something that is more modern and different, perhaps set with several stones and colored rather than the clear look of diamonds and diamante.

Modern antique style engagement rings are possibly the best alternative for someone wanting to have the look without the cost.

Today's Discussion

Does anyone know what the history of the diamond engagement ring is?
I'm curious to know because I've been looking at antique engagement rings and I've noticed that many have colored stones instead of diamonds. I'm now considering purchasing a non-diamond antique style engagement ring because I think that they are much prettier. I'm sort of curious, though, as to when diamonds became the "traditional" stone.

Diamonds have only been "precious" stones over the past 150 years as a result of the DeBeers family and the South African diamond cartel.

Queen Victoria of England had the first i think. She changed a lot of the traditional customes like the white new dress, and catherdal style veils. but before that, i haven't read too many things about diamond rings.

Here's what Wikipededia had to say; But I kind of like this history better. It talks about when it became "all about the diamond"; They've actually been valued for centuries, but for different reasons;
