Can birds get sick from sharing a cage with rats?
We have a 6ft rat cage that would be perfect for either rats or birds. Since our bird cage fell and broke, I've been tempted to section it in half and put the 3 rats on bottom and 2 cockatiels on top. Does anyone know if this will cause health issues for either of them, provided I give it a thorough cleaning?

You definitely do not have your rats that close to your birds. Rats are a predator to birds and having them that close will put your birds under so much stress they will get sick and die, never mind the bitten and attacked toes and anything else the rats can get to and the illness from the toxicity of rat dropping and wee that the birds will be susceptible to. Birds sleep at night and rats dont. With Rats under the birds, the rats will be trying everything they can to get to the birds and the birds wont be able to sleep. It would be like you trying to sleep in a room with a caged tiger at the foot of your bed. You cannot do this.

Bad idea on so many levels. You just don't mix different species in this manner, most certainly not rodents & birds! It would be torture for the cockatiels. Unless you want your pet birds to spend the rest of their lives afraid & stressed, get them a new sturdy cage and keep it in a safe, secure place.

Bad Idea, I would suggest you Never MIX species some species have bacteria that is beneficial to it but can kill your birds. If their wings are clipped u're better off making a perch area (maybe in a corner of a room) in the meanwhile til you buy a new cage. I made one out of wood sticks of different widths I bought at a hobby shop. Just make sure the wood isn't toxic to birds and make sure they aren't painted. You can also use dry tree branches just make sure you CLEAN them well and remove the bark.
