Today's Discussion

What does it mean to have a cam timing problem and how much does it cost?
My check engine light came on, and I brought it by the local mechanic and they said I had a problem with something like the came timing but I couldn't fix it then so I went ahead and moved up to where I was going. Its been about a month, and now its acting like it wants to stall. How much will the cam timing cost to be repaired? They also mentioned that I would need to get my timing belt repaired too. Its like a 2000 chevy metro.

The cam in you engine is the component that controls when your valves open and close in relation to your piston position. Timing belts become stretched and worn over the life time of a car. Belts are usually a little pricey to have replaced however if you don't have this fixed, you stand a good chance of having a valve smash through a position head. On certain cars there are sensors called cam shaft position sensors which obviously control the position of the cam. Perhaps one of these are starting to fail. Hope this helps.

it depends what kind of car it is as to what it costs n entails.

Hello! I expect the problem they diagnosed was with the camshaft sensor, it certainly sounds like it. However; If it is actually the cam timing which has jumped out of sync, which would normally be due to loose timing belt, then you may well have more serious problems looming on the horizon if you don't have it investigated properly soon. That's kind of vague. If the timing belt is worn then it is just the cost of timing belt replacement (the cost could be from $400 to $1300). If it is anything else, the cost could be more or less. Good Luck...

MAD CAT, YOUR TIMING BELT IS YOUR PROBLEM. THE TIMING BELT, CONTROLS THE CAM POSITION, TO THE CRANKSHAFT, WHICH CONTROLS YOUR TIMING. THE BELT, HAS PROBABLY STRETCHED, AND THATS ALL THAT IS WRONG.SAVE YOURSELF THE STREES, AND THE HEADACHE, GO....TO YOUR DEALERSHIP, AND HAVE THE BELT REPLACED. AS SOON AS THE NEW BELT IS REPLACED, THE TIMING WILL FALL BACK TO THE SPEC. OF THE MANU. AND YOU HAVE YOUR NEW/OLD CAR BACK IN SHOWROOM RUNNING CONDITION.

From what you've said, it is probably the timing belt, either stretched or jumped a tooth out of position. In either case, it needs to be replaced, NOW, before you damage the engine seriously. Cost = about $20 - $30 parts, + at least $200 labor.

The camshaft itself is lighter with new timing, and the combustion chamber shape and head porting are different. The result is a single-cam engine that gets more power to the ground and accelerates harder than the twin-cam it replaces.
