How to repair older car jacks. What is usually the suspect part, and can it be replaced?
I have two standard car jacks (lever type, 2-4 ton) cast off from others. One raises but cannot support much weight; the other cannot raise to the height it used to. Is this a fluid leak (over time)? If so, how can I add more fluid? Is this an O-ring seal problem? If so, which one is likely to be the suspect?

the 0-rings are usually what goes. they get dried out and then start to leak and not hold pressure.

easier to go buy a new one might just be out of fluid some you can replace a o ring not hard but easier to just get a new jack

If you can't find the manufacturers model or serial number labeled on the unit, your stuck. Look over the entire jack including underneath it for this information.

id say both need oil.do not remove the screw that says do not remove.there will either be a rubber plug on the ram itself, or on top near the pump handle on floorjacks is a screwtype plug,to the right as you hold the jack handle in hand. fill with jack oil in the down position.close system, pump up to full height, let down once or twice, recheck
