Depends where you live. In the US all you have to do is go down to the Coast Guard Station and apply for a Mariner's Document and you are good to go.

You will very rarely see entry level jobs on ships advertised becasue there are usually more people applying than there are jobs anyway. Don't let this put you off though, if you are hard working you can do it!! I got my job on cruise ships by just sending my CV with a covering letter to "Personnel Deptartment" at various company HQ addresses which I found online. I was asked for an interview almost straight away but then you have to wait for a long time for a position to become available and also to apply for the visa etc. Good luck and go for it!!

I worked on cruise ships for 11 years and had a fantastic time from start to finish...it can be very hard work sometimes but the life expreiance and travel are totally worth it. What I would suggest may take a little time but will give you a good shot at getting a job onboard and in the best department. Find your local Casino, when they do a training school, join this and complete your dealer training (approx 6 weeks), once you have finished this, get about 12-15 months experience and then apply to www.oceancasinojobs.com This will put youi in touch with Carnival Corporation Casino Division. These operate the casino's on most of the big lines as well as some of the smaller ones, including Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland America Line, P&O, Princess, Costa and some other smaller companies. I worked on a number of these fleets during my times and have visited over eighty countries. The added benefit is that the onboard casino's are usually closed when the ships are in port so you get the whole time to go off exploring or even just to have a lazy day at the beach. Other departments often have to work while the ships are in port so you can actually miss some fantastic places and experiences because you had to work...is this what you wan't...I don't think so.

If you are in the UK, why not contact P. & O. who have their offices in Southampton. They have a web site if you are interested. My father was in the Royal Navy and I think he enjoyed his life doing that better than anything he did before or after. He used to have great tales about all the places he'd been and things he'd seen.
