Today's Discussion

I just got a Char-griller Duo. How do I use the side burner with a charcoal chimney?
When I follow the chimney directions of putting newspaper underneath and stacking charcoals on top, it works, but leaves a humongous mess. Burned newspaper bits and charcoal dust end up all over the side burner, leaving a big mess that requires quite a few paper towels to clean up. Is this correct, or am I missing something? The manual for the Char-Griller Duo says that you can use the side burner to light a charcoal chimney, and it is a perfect fit.

First off, with a direct flame from the burner, newspaper is not required. Start the side burner and place the charcoal chimney (filled only with charcoal) over the flames. Once the charcoal starts smoking, remove it from the burner and place it on the ground in an area that is free of flammable items. It will continue burning on it's own. If it stops smoking, then place it back over the flames for a few minutes. Don't leave it on top of the burner or the ashes that fall, as the charcoal turns grey, will fall down into the burner area and make a big mess and possibly even ruin your burner.
