something with a lot of shading... it will let you play around more. animals are always fun. my first charcoal drawing was actually a portrait. charcoal is not much different than pencil, just a little messier, if you have experience with pencil drawing. you could also just do some basic shapes, cubes, spheres etc. to get the feel of the medium. if you want to go a little harder without doing animals or something, try a still life. those are always great for getting used to a new medium.

Have a look at for ideas - it is a website of well known, very versatile New Zealand/Australian artist Sylvia Kula who paints and draws a lot of different subjects. She is one of my favourite modern artists.
