Why don't they simplify matters by calling it the Checker Auto Parts 312, or better yet round it off to 300 laps. That 500 in the title is misleading to people.

It's no more mis-leading than the Savemart 300, which is 300k, NOT 300 miles. In off road, right here in good old central Illinois, we have a race that is advertised as a 100k. Sounds like we are going further than we actually are, but then again, the track is anywhere between 2 and 5 miles long.

Maybe they do that so they can read the speedometer better in the Toyota's. Seriously, that is pretty stupid if you think about it.

Its either 500 kilometers, which is how the race is sometime named. Its either miles, laps, or kilometers. I know that every country except the US uses the Metric System, but I find it more difficult personally, and I think that, it just gives the race an exciting name so more people will tune in to watch the race unfold with this amazing championship battle going on between Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson.
