You have a highly athletic breed of dog. You need a higher barrier or you need to crate him instead.

Easy take a piece of string and tie it around a door handle in your hallway tie the other end to his tail that should stop him.

buy 2? put one on top of the other? and train her that she's not allowed to cross it without your permission. or you could look into purchasing a scat matt. it shocks the dog if they step on it, and they quickly learn not to pass a certain spot in the house. ADD: Scat Mat Crates are not as bad as they seem, they are very useful training tools. But I can totally understand where you are coming from by not wanting to use one, I never have with my dog.

Maybe you could try getting another child gate and screwing one to the top of the other to make it taller so she cant jump over it.

If your dog is destructive to your home while you are away you should put him/her in an crate. If your dog is not destructive...why not just let him/her stay loose in your home?

Our dogs used to do that, so we just put the gate up higher, but not so high that it can crawl under it. They eventually just gave up.

Have it put down.

Like said before, you may want to try using a higher barrier or you may want to try putting your dog in a crate instead. Good luck and I hope I helped you!

Just a suggestion - but what about covering the gaps so he can't see through it. (Put a towel over it or something). It might be that if he can't see on what is on the other side, he won't be interested. Or put a box etc. in front of the gate on his side so its more of a jump. We used to use a board for my dog - but when there was thunder / lightning - he could knock it down with ease! Maybe you needed to do it from when your dog was a puppy. (Edit - please don't crate him! Not unless you REALLY have to)

Get a larger gate. They sell them in all sizes at PetsEdge. You can email them for a catalog. The prices are reasonable. They are called x-pens. You can get them at PetSmart, but they cost a whole lot more there.

May be you should try a harness that is made to keep dogs from jumping up...it is quiet effective, I have "counter surfers" that have to wear a harness when I am gone...they have no idea what it is and they don't care either....they are awesome and at Patsmart or Petco......this is a great tool in training to keep down.

You could buy a jump stopper. They are like a leash on the back of the legs. They can walk, lay and sit normal, but can't jump up.

Buy a dog gate as opposed to a child gate, they are slightly taller. They are now readily available from Argos, where as previously only stocked by pet stores. It stopped my dogs from jumping over child gates.

Re-name it a dog-gate. Your springer will then understand. You'll have to fix the kid, though.

i have a springer spaniel called SAM, he,s now 10yrs old ,but when he was younger he was absolutely mental.we tried every thing to quiet him down,he used to tear round the living room jumping over the chairs.after having him at the vet they advised me to get him neutered, this worked soon afterwords he was a different dog,and he is very loving and contented now.

I am going through this right now with my Cairn Terrier. She is still a baby,so she can't quite make it,but I know it won't be long before she can.Right now, what works is going over to her and saying "No.",quietly but firmly(she is very sensitive to corrections),when she gets down,I tell her to stay, and praise her when she does not get up for about 4 seconds. So far,it's working. P.S. That trick with two gates on top of each other works. We had to do this with our toddler,he did not like to stay put!

I have the same problem. I have to put two gates on top of each other and put bar stools on the other side to keep her from pushing through them. Good Luck.

I would advise stiff cardboard ziptie'd to the gate to stop him seeing through it. Also adding an ironing board may help? - I would not suggest karate for the dog - unless you want hong-kong-fooey.

My family seem to have a history of 'Nut- case' pooches - we had a Basset that could thieve anything from anywhere. My cousin had a Springer- which saw ANY barrier as a challenge - it is in their breeding I suppose - to 'spring' out of thick 'bushy' cover in order to put up game. As such it's difficult to stop the scatty darlings- Perhaps a nylon 'net' curtain to bridge the gap twix ceiling and top of gate - so as to obscure the 'view'- plus if Springer attempts jump it should deflect him/ her without damage... not the best or original idea- but it may work. Professional training? Worth a try - we took both e Springer and Basset to training- they were 'expelled' for being disruptive- hmm and the Basset stole the 'class treats' box - the Springer and Basset ate the lot between them.

Raise the height.

Try a proper dog gate, they're alot taller that the baby gates and my springer has yet to jump ours

You know the gardening canes that you would support your runner beans and things with, If you were to tie some longer lengths of them to the struts of your gate. It was be a cheap efficient way of sorting the problem. Good luck

collielover
Yes, you really do need to do something about this as it is very dangerous for a dog to jump the gate when you're not there, they can actually get their legs tangled in the bars and could be hanging there for goodness knows how long before you come to his aid, and sustain some terrible injuries too! I suggest you buy a proper dog gate, not a child gate, they are much taller. Also, i find it puzzling that you are against crate training your dog, if you are using a gate you are confining him when you're out, why not crate train him? No-one would suggest that you put your dog in a crate and leave him there for hours on end, done properly your dog will love his crate and will not object to going in a crate when you leave him. At least you'll know he's safe and you won't have the worry of what he's been up to while your gone.It will also save him from the stress of knowing you'll be cross with him when you get home because he's escaped again. You may think that you don't get cross about it but he will pick up on your body language even if you're a little bit irritated.
