Well, Italy didn't exist as a country until long after it was Christian, but if you want to refer to the place/area, that would be Roman and of course the Roman empire was pagan until Constantine turned Christian in the 4th Century or so. But most Roman art was borrowed from the Greeks, so you are talking about the stunning works of ancient art rather than some primitive symbology. You might be able to go with the Etruscans but not all that primitive

You could also have a look at the art work in Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the class might find some of the gruesome images of bodies (or at least the shells of them) dug out of the volcanic ash to teenage taste!
