What's ya got in the garden?? Whatever is evergreen is fair game in my wreaths. I'm not keen on blue spruce, I love the color but the needles are too stiff and they hurt to work with. Ideally you should have several different textures: say needled evergreen, a broadleaf evergreen...euonymus for example, a colored broadleaf that will hold leaves for awhile....nandina for example or silvery artemisia, and juniper/cypress type foliage. If you have berries, great, cut their stems and incorporate them in as well. Usually the needle foliage: fir, pine, spruce is the major greenery and then accent with bundles of the other stuff. Garlands are tough and take a fair amount of wire to get all the bundles properly held together. Wreaths can be wired onto a wire frame, my favorite way and then add pine cones or tree ornaments for accent. Another is "swag" which is about a 36 inch long arrangement with 1/3 facing up and 2/3 facing down all held together at the come-together spot. Add a bow to cover the wire at that point.

When i was a kid we had holly plants and lots of pine trees at hand. We would make a wreath to hang on the front door using coat hangers to form the circle, take cuttings from the pine tree and snipings of the holly to add color. a little mistletoe was a nice touch and can be found in most regions of the US. You can use tie wraps to secure or weave the sapling cuts around the wire. Not only dose it smell great but it puts you in the season

We made and sold them out of holly boughs, pine, cypress or spruce branches. Tufts of ornamental grasses like maiden grass or pampas grass are a nice addition as are the berry clusters of nandina and beauty berry. If you can find mistletoe, that of course is appropriate.

Last year, when we bought our tree the business let us get branches they were trimming from the bottom of the trees as they bagged them. You could add holly and rosemary. We used a wire coat hanger, clipped of the hook part and them shaped it. Buy some floral wire to attach greenery, overlap, keep it tight and then add bows, ornaments...whatever. Have fun!

Try Amaryllis! Their gorgeous blooms could make for a beautiful centerpiece or table wreath. Amy Dube

I use the leaves from my magnolia tree. I attach them to a styrofoam wreath with sewing pins. Red cedar is kind of scraggly but it smells wonderful. I cut boughs, tie them with red ribbon, and hang them from nails of cup hooks.
