When you think about pipes you will probably think of ones that are made from copper or other metals, and not a clear pvc pipe system.

Clear pipes made from pvc are becoming more and more commonplace thanks to their large variety of different uses. I was interested in this so I did a little research and found that they are used in more places than you would think.

Pipes made from pvc are known for their inability to become contaminated, unlike metal pipe work. For this reason they are widely used in chemical processing, in hospitals, in laboratories, food processing factories and anywhere else that needs high quality pipes that will not harbor contaminants.

As well as this clear pipes made from pvc show up any cracks of leaks incredibly well, so if there are any problems they can be quickly spotted. When these are compared with metal pipes it is obvious to see their advantages, which is why so many different companies are using them.

As clear pvc pipe systems are already in use in many locations, already it looks as though it will only be a matter of time before they are used in residential settings.

Today's Discussion

Is there anywhere I can buy just an 18" piece of clear 4" pvc pipe and 90-degree angles for a home project?
I want to make a waterbridge for my aquariums, but any place that has clear pvc pipe only sells it in 10-ft lengths. At $16 or more per foot, that's just a lot more than I can afford unless I plan to go into production! It needs to be rigid pvc, as it will be used as a "bridge" between two different aquariums, carrying water and to serve as a sort of aquaduct!

I was going to suggest Home Depot or Lowes, but you've probably looked there. Sorry.

Look in the Yellow Pages for some reputable plumbers and make a few calls. Tell them that you need only an 18" piece for a project, they should have several pieces like that just lying around, and might even just let you come and pick them up for free. If you are respectful when you ask, I can't imagine they would turn you down.

Have you looked for flexible acrylic tubing, or does it need to be pvc?

I would try a specialized plastic pipe dealer. In my area it is Portland Plastic Pipe, Portland, Maine.
