is my air compressor defective? HELP! contractors carpenters!?
I bought an air compressor from Costco. it's a 2 gallon tank made by all power. when i turn it on, the machine runs and pump in air to a certain pressure and it will automatically shut off. when the pressure starts to lower as I use the machine it will automatically run by itself . Correct? but when it runs automatically by itself again I just hear like a errrr noise and the fan doesnt' move and no pressure going. Then the engine seems rather hot as steams are sent out. I turn off the machine I pull the ring and release all the pressure back down to zero and turn on again. Now the system runs and fan moves and pressure builds up. is it defective? isn't it suppose to run automatically and build pressure if it runs low? I want to know

Yes. The compressor will run to a designated pressure then shut off. As the compressor air is used to a certain pressure depending on the limiter settings, it will turn back on and run until it reaches the max setting and then shut off. Sounds like the valve is faulty between the motor and the tank. This stop's the full tank pressure from pressing against the piston that creates the air for the tank. The compressor is faulty and could possibly be dangerous. Costco is a generic compressor and I would advise a better brand if you are going to use it often. I am not sure how you would fix the valve because it is built into the compressor valve cylinder. Good luck and be careful.

If you are running it on an extension cord or a circuit that is weak it does not have enough power to start the motor. Try a different outlet and see if that helps. It will also do this if it is cold outside, if you open the drain plug and let it run until it is warm it will work if it is cold.
