Today's Discussion

i have a 19 month old son who, unlike many kids his age, is a total daredevil. he could care less for toys...?
... he's rather swan dive off the couch, wrestle the dog, knock over lamps, pull electrical cords... ok, basically he's a completely physical kid and toys and games don't work with him (at least not with me, his dad). and when he's not doing more adult things, he just whines all day long. this "active" bit is going to be great later when he is older, because he'll be an active kid. but for now, it's making things really tough. when he goes to bed at night, i'm COMPLETELY worn out. i need some advice on what to do to keep him happy.

Take him to the park or do something active outside....when he gets older make sure you put him in a sport. lolz :D

My two boys are exactly the same way. They have absolutley no fear. The best thing you can really do is take him to the park and let him run it all out. Let him run wild there. It just gets worse.. I have been to the emergency room with my son for a varity of things, stiches, broken arm, ect .. 12 times and he is only 6! The best thing you can do is let them run wild outside!

ha my baby girl is the same way!!! she's 18 months. she has one of those little power wheel 4-wheelers & she drives it standing up!!! loves climbing anything & doing flips/summer salts! she jumps all over the couch (luckily not off, but we have hardwood floors so I'm sure she figured that one out quick!) jumps & flips over the dogs! sorry I don't have much advice either! but thought it was amusing for the similar story! luckily I have a little park right down the road that is completely fenced in so I just let her go & I sit & relax!

Take him out of the house run his energy in a toddler gymnasium kids love that just into soft block go crazy and not get hurt while being rough never take him to a ballpin gross things in those unsafe (read into it ) The Y offers a lot of activities for mommies and babies to do together grap some finger paint go in the backyard with huge sheets of paper and let him get wiild with it lol always works take him to a trail walk him in a stroller he will love the sight and give him treats should be good I am a baby sitter & watch 4 kids at once all small age ranges for a woman

My 22 month old son is the same way. He loves to play rough and he is happiest running around with the "big boys". If I am not constantly watching him he will do something crazy like climb on the couch and dive off of it. My suggestion to you would be to take him to parks and let him play outside to get rid of some of that energy. Also, he may be acting risky because he's bored. Give him plenty of experiences. Take him to the zoo, to a children's museum, or to new parks or play zones. You might even consider a play group. My friend has two daughter's, ages 18 months and 3 years, that are very active. She enrolled them in a gymnastics program for toddlers. They love it. Just give your son plenty of opportunities to play and lots of fun and exciting experiences.

my sisters little boy was the same way and they just started to take him out more and play play play and now he is 6 and he's still the same way he was doing bad in school he never wanted to learn or sit down so they took him to the doctor and found out he has a.d.d. and now he's on medicine and doing good. but as young as your child is don't worry he's just being a little boy and having fun!! good luck

OK this sounds strange and I don't want to scare you, but he may have a sensory problem. There is something called a "sensory seeker" who just doesn't feel things as easily. He needs to do all the daredevil stuff to actually feel the sensations that are associated with activities. Try getting a book called "the out of sync child" it describes different sensory problems and how they affect daily life. if you agree you might want to contact early intervention in your state and have him evaluated. They might be able to give him occupational therapy to deal with the sensory issues and teach you things to help him be calmer and comfortable.
