Today's Discussion

Why does Darth Maul use the Force to throw an object at a button rather than use the Force to push the button?
In The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul uses the Force to throw a small object at a button to open a door. Why doesn't he use the Force to push the button directly?

He's a stupid showboater. The Dark Side may make you powerful, but it can't make you intelligent.

You're seriously asking this kind of question about a prequel? You're looking for reason, logic, and a plot in a *Star Wars Prequel*? Do yourself a favor and go get blind drunk at a bar, it'll be more constructive than that.

Unfortunately Darth Maul is no longer with us to answer that question. I suspect projected objects film better and are less ambigous than simple scenery tricks.

Why not I think it looked cooler than using the force to push the button It would not have looked as cool if the button justed moved forward and the door opened

Hey Kurt, long time. I have to agree with Ward. I have the book and it makes no mention of that particular display of power. Honestly, I'm sure some director / cinematographer thought it looked cooler than just pushing the button (even with the force). Of course, if I was going to speculate, I would say that Maul did it more to intimidate his opponents. After all he is a Sith. Nothing brings that to the forefront like a casual use of the force. Something a highly disciplined Jedi Knight would never do. He didn't so much push the button; as he did destroy the panel. That the reaction to this action was for the door to open is even more questionable than the act of throwing the debris at the controls. I would put forward the hypothesis that the fine control needed to just push the button might have taken away his focus from his enemies. This is a mistake a fighter as accomplished, as Darth Maul would not make. Still the most likely answer is that it just looked darned cool.
