the department store credit cards have a higher interest rate. it's not one the best card to have. try chase or citi bank. they are usually pretty good about giving credit for first timers. good luck

pick a store, any store, buy a small item, say $50. make steady payments, pay it off by paying regularly, that's all. and Whalla! you have your credit rating, do this again... your credit rating builds. regularity and consistency build credit ratings that's all you need. They are only out to see if you are a regular honest person who pays their bills on time.

Lets say you want to buy something big like a new fridge, buy it on those pay latter schemes, and then pay it off bit by bit. Get a phone contract but PAY IT ON TIME. use your bank's interest free overdraft. Get insurance, etc pretty much anything with a credit...
