If you have a water heater which uses electricity and would like to convert to one which uses gas, or are limited for space when it comes to an area in which to install the heater, then the perfect solution for you would be a direct vent water heater.

Direct vent water heaters can be placed in any wall space which has access to an outside wall as it is self contained and vents the fumes at the same time as bringing fresh air into the unit.

These units are also safer than other gas units as no combustible gasses can leak into the house. These can also be installed without cutting any holes in your walls as they can be vented through a window such as in the bathroom or laundry room.

A direct vent water heater is extremely energy efficient having a large amount of insulation and is relatively inexpensive as it costs about the same as a name brand large water heater.

These water heaters are available to hold hot water in various capacities depending on the needs of your home.

Whether you have a small home with one bathroom or a larger home with two or three, you will be able to find a direct vent water heater to satisfy all of your hot water needs through large internet retailers such as Amazon.com.

Today's Discussion

Can a direct vent gas water heater switch to a regular vent one?
I currently have a direct vent water heater in my house (which uses gas). Since direct-vent water heaters are slowly disappearing, how difficult will it be for me to convert to using a regular vent? What are some of the requirements of a regular vent? Please provide me with any information that you may have. Thanks,

USA My initial reaction is no, you cannot. The direct vent model is manufactured and tested the way it is. The venting is made specifically for that heater, that specific combustion air flow, that pilot flame, that ignition, and of course, that venting etc... The best way to find out is to ask the manufacturer if it can be done, and what items need to be changed / modified. If the mfr says yes, then make sure you follow their instructions to the letter, or you risk fire and/or carbon monoxide poisoning. I do not know what you mean by a "regular" vent, so I will assume you mean non power-assisted venting. I do not know what water heater you have, where in the building it is located, and what type construction you have. Therefore, the best place to get information on gas vent requirements is to look up the different vent types in the 2006 International Fuel Gas Code, and find the type of appliance you have. The Int'l Fuel Gas Code also covers commercial installations. The sections applicable to single family homes are included in the 2006 International Residential Code. So, be safe and get a copy of the fuel gas code or residential code for the latest and greatest facts and code requirements.

Your direct vent water heater draws it's combustion air from the outside atmosphere. If you go to a regular water heater, you may be able to use the same building penetration for the flue, but chances are, you'll pull combustion air from the attic space through one or two 4" duct or single wall pipe. Shouldn't be hard to go to a regular heater, but direct vent water heaters are still available. Pricey but still around.
