What is wrong with my 1996 Dodge Ram's fuel delivery system?
I have a '96 Dodge Ram 2500. I recently have been having trouble with the truck starting. It cranks but will not fully start. It will start right up when I pour gasoline straight into the throttle body but then shuts off once that fuel has been burnt up. I assumed it was the fuel pump so I replaced that. Still is doing the same thing. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else it could be?

You know you have spark, so you have to find out if you have power to pump, and if so, you'll be checking the remaining electronic-computer components and wiring.

Maybe you got a bad fuel pump. It happened to me. I installed a new pump in my 96 Ram and it died after 1/2 day. Check the fuel pressure, then check the wiring.

You've proved your problem is fuel delivery. That means you either are not getting sufficient fuel flow or pressure. The web site below has a very straight-forward guide to troubleshooting your fuel pump and regulator. As you will see from reading it, you will need two things. First is the normal operating fuel pressure of your fuel system, which is 40-50 PSI. Second is a gauge. If you like tools you can usually buy an adequate screw-on fuel pressure gauge from about $30, or some auto parts stores have loaner programs where you can borrow one and test your fuel pump at no cost. Good luck!

If the new pump failed the filter may have been clogged with plastic. If you changed it the auto shutdown relay turns the fuel pump relay on, it may be a fuse under the hood near the battery, some used fusible link wires that burn, look ok, but cause an open circuit. Have the engine computer scanned for codes. Also. A test light(12volt) is a good fuse tester, and you can get one at a parts store.

if u are getting the fuel pumps from autozone or orrialy then it was just bad im dealing with the same thing on a 2000 ranger 2-3 fuel pumps already and my husband works at a car lot and has changed about 4 in a wk on the same vehicle
