How do you determine the cation of a group 1 metal (Periodic Table of Elements)?
How do you determine the cation of a group 1 element - Periodic Table of Elements; then the anion of a third period non-metal? Thank you for assistance!

well, elements like to gain/lose electrons to gain a noble gas configuration. so.. elements in group 1 all like to lose an electron, since that's the fastest they can get to 8 or 2 electrons in their outer electron shell, which is more stable. so the cations of group 1 would be +1. anions and cations are different for different groups, so as you go across the third period you're going to get every kind of ion charge. I don't think knowing the period an element is in is going to help you predict the charge.
