Today's Discussion

Do energy saver appliances really make a difference?
My boyfriend and I recently purchased a townhouse comparable in size/layout/location to other apartments I have lived in, but the electric bill is astronomical - about $50-80 more/month. We've tried all the usual tricks - turning the thermostat up a couple of degrees, turning it up more while we're at work, using cold water to do laundry, and have installed some weather stripping foam around our patio door, but it's not making much difference (about $30 this month). We have a heat pump and central A/C and electric appliances. The only thing I can think of is to replace the appliances in the kitchen - the stove and dishwasher are older. I'm also not sure of the age of the water heater. If it will lower the bills significantly, I'd be happy to put out the money, but we don't have a lot of extra money to throw around. What would save us the most money? Actual personal experience would be helpful. We do leave our blinds closed during the day, don't have a computer, and only have one TV on at a time. Occasionally use two ceiling fans upstairs to help with A/C circulation, but they are turned off when we are not at home. The hours I am up are probably LESS than other places I've lived based on the fact that my b/f and I get up early for work and go to bed much earlier these days!

It is your heat pump, AC and all electric appliances that are driving up the bill. What would really save you money is a gas dryer, gas range and gas hot water heater. At least where I live, natural gas is about 1/3 the cost of electricity.

You may be surprised at how live style will increase you bill. If you stay up later at night then you electric bill will go up because of your lighting, change your bulbs to the new energy saver(squiggly) even the out side light as well. and use one TV, Computer at a time, Close the shades in the day time when it is hot out and open them when it is cold out. put a check on your Life style and see how it differs from your old place. and ask you self. What would I be doing life style wise if the electric went out. If you go out more often or hang out at other peoples houses, then your bills should go down. When you leave the house then shut it down until you get home. get a thermostat that you can program(I think there is college courses for them) ha ha. but you know what I mean. The less you use your house the less it costs to run it. And Yes you can look for the Energy-Star logo's on your appliances for more money savings.

Call the energy company and have them come out and do an analysis and they can tell you where you might improve your usage. The things that use up the most energy aside from the a/c is the hot water heater and the refrigerator. I do a lot of the things you said you do, and tried compact fluorescent bulbs and I don't notice much of a difference, if any. Something you can do also is to hold up a match to your windows and if there is any air coming through, you will notice a flicker. Quality windows might be a better investment before the appliances. (I want to believe that the energy company bases our bills on an average of the area. I do all I can to be frugal with my usage and my bill is not that much different from people who keep their a/c on 65, and run their appliances nonstop.)
