Do energy saver appliances really make a difference? My boyfriend and I recently purchased a townhouse comparable in size/layout/location to other apartments I have lived in, but the electric bill is astronomical - about $50-80 more/month. We've tried all the usual tricks - turning the thermostat up a couple of degrees, turning it up more while we're at work, using cold water to do laundry, and have installed some weather stripping foam around our patio door, but it's not making much difference (about $30 this month).
We have a heat pump and central A/C and electric appliances. The only thing I can think of is to replace the appliances in the kitchen - the stove and dishwasher are older. I'm also not sure of the age of the water heater. If it will lower the bills significantly, I'd be happy to put out the money, but we don't have a lot of extra money to throw around. What would save us the most money?
Actual personal experience would be helpful.
We do leave our blinds closed during the day, don't have a computer, and only have one TV on at a time. Occasionally use two ceiling fans upstairs to help with A/C circulation, but they are turned off when we are not at home.
The hours I am up are probably LESS than other places I've lived based on the fact that my b/f and I get up early for work and go to bed much earlier these days!
