What's a good way to remove factory decals from motorcycle side covers?
I just bought a 1983 Honda this morning. It's in really nice shape, but all of the factory decals are pretty well fried from the sunlight. Is there a way to remove them without damaging the paint underneath? The paint is pretty nice. The tank is dent-free and is black with silver panels. The fuel info decal on top was painted over in flat black, though. I'd like to keep the silver, but wouldn't mind doing it all black. I would just need to get the decals off without scratching up the plastic too bad. @Candid Chris - Don't worry. I have shirts as old as this bike!

first off before trying anything make sure to try it on an unseen spot to do this id probably use a thing called goo-gone or something along those lines. if its not on hard you could try peeling it then use rubbing compound on it. if the paint jib is already crap you could just sand it all down and repaint.

easy Answer is NO.. anything that will attack a decal that's been on since 1983 will attack the paint as well...plus the paint will be a different color under the decal.. so if you get it off.. paint will not be faded.. best fix is sand it off.. repaint

I have a shadow that we repainted we used a hairdryer with a little patience you can do it...

ive done this by accident before. i jet washed my bike and the stickers came flying off. you could always try a steam washer as well.

Honda has clear coat over the factory decals . You can try a razor blade... I restore bikes, I would put a decal over the top.

Don't remove the decals until you're ready to paint. But always wear old clothes, boots and helmet until that time and you be riding in STYLE! ;D

3M makes a real good adhesive remover, pull the decals off with a razor blade and scrub it down with a real soft cloth. I used this method when I had to repaint a bunch of school busses last summer, comes out reasonably clean looking if you have steady hands. On a paint job that old though, you're gonna have to repaint if you want perfect.

use a hair dryer and heat up the glue, you work on one edge slowly as you keep tension on the sticker heat up the sticker and glue. I have done this on a lot of things, and have not had any problems with age of glue or sticker. or the paint being discolored. take your time its slow, but it works good. I bought a 4 dollar hair dryer out of a thrift store, and peeled all of the decals off of a toyota pick up with it. you can rewax the paint with car wax and it should look good if its in decent shape, or repaint as you like.

I have experience doing this on a new bike. My new harley had stupid warning stickers on every piece of open chrome where they could fit a warning sticker. I used Goo Gone, a plastic putty knife and lots of patients and had them all off in about three hours.

On a Honda of that vintage, they are more than likely under clear-coat, so there's no way to remove them without a need to repaint. They are removed using a razor blade. The tank is (relatively) easy, since it is metal, but the side-covers are a lesson in patience, because you don't want to nick the plastic underneath. Good luck! I had my 1981 Honda custom painted, and the prep work cost way more than the actual painting and finishing.

If they are not under clear coat body shops use a special pinstripe removal wheel in a drill motor to remove them. Look at auto parts stores, or contact a body shop (best idea).
