Today's Discussion

Fish farms?
One critisism of the industry is it over crowds fish. A rebuttel is that most fish are naturally inclined to close quarters schools and the conditions are accceptable. I am looking for information to judge the practice on.

The incidence of infections (parasites, viral, etc) is much higher in overcroweded farmed fish. That is a good indicator that the fish are packed too densely. Many aquaculture places have reduced crowding specifically for that reason.

The Great Leap
Yes many breeds of fish tend to live in schools. The problem with factory farming is that they have no other choice. They will be trapped in those small ponds for their entire life. MANY fish die from disease and other problems associated with factory farms. The conditions on factory farms are nothing like they would be in nature. To compare the two is ridiculous. Factory farming is never alright. Even though fish are as cuddly as puppies and kittens, they are still animals and animals weren't put here for us to torture. They may have been put here for us to eat, but it was never supposed to be like it is now.

I don't have the specific information you want, but keep in mind the use of fish farms is largely responsible for the upkeep of the salmonoid population in the Sierra Nevada drainage.

La Vie Boheme
Wrong section. Vegetarians don't eat fish.
