How to choose a free standing AC unit?
My husband and I live in northern Arizona, so while it's not getting into the 100s regularly in the summer, it rarely drops below 90 degrees during the day (70/80 at night) from about May trough the end of September. Our 500sq ft apartment is made of some sort of brick that just holds in heat, so it doesn't get below the high 90s inside day or night for 5 straight months (we have a indoor thermometer). The complex was built in the 1960s and has no ac, and the windows won't fit one of the window ac units. Fans and leaving the windows open dont help either. .It's miserable all summer long, and after 2 summers of living in an oven, we want to get a little free standing ac unit. Were looking into ones in the $200-$300 range to use in our bedroom to keep it cooler at night. I notice looking online, different units have different specs, and am wondering how to choose the most efficient one for cooling a small space?

Call the manufacturer and give them the zone you live in , the square feet of the apartment and have them pick one out..probably 2-3 tons of cooling to compensate for the poor construction of building you probably aren't going to find one in the $200-$300 dollar range to do the job you want it to..

three hundred put you at a disadvantage i think you need something that is super efficient has exhaust exit not out the window and will not overheat bad wiring 112 v best thing to do is get the free local building inspector over he has a lot of experience with the different types of units may be you could get a stand alone unit and run it on 212 v please contact your local inspector that would be best he is in the know and works for nothing and gives the best advice

For a home your size, you will do as well with a large FAN.

Well your gonna have to spend about 400-450 ish. What your looking for is a portable ac unit. You want to get one that at least 12,000 BTUS . Something like this A gal I know had something like this, it worked fine for her apartment. But bear in mind it would only do 1 main room. The exhaust has to go out a window. So, as long as the window opens your good to go !
