French Revolution?
I have to write a stupid essay and I don't understand the question. Can anyone explain it? What were some of the reasons for the failure of the French Revolution to initiate lasting representative government and for the rise of the new dictatorship?

I can explain the question better: the goal of the French Revolution (to replace the existing monarchy with a republic) was not met by the revolution. Since there was not a structure in place when the revolution lost its force, Napoleon walked in as dictator (in the absence of a leader and lack of a government, it was easy for a dictatorship to be created). So what you need to do is identify what the goals of the revolution were, what the new government was meant to be, why it did not happen, and why the country was ripe for a dictator to come in and take over (probably because of all the chaos).

Ask Napolean how he got to power, and why he made himself Consul for life, and you will find out.

In a word, internal squabbling. The Revolution lasted several years and toward the end the Committee of Public Safety was executing a lot of people. Napoleon came back flushed with victories and found it easy to push the government aside. Once he did, he created a dictatorship and then an empire. Napoleon was a master propaganda artist, and he promised the French stability and order, which he did give them (his re-working of the French law code is still in effect in France). He also brought them prosperity (by looting Italy and Austria) and created a whole new class of nobles. But in the long run, the Revolution didn't fail. The French people had had a taste of liberty and they wanted it back, so they overthrew their government in 1830 and in 1848. After the Franco-Prussian War, the French were tired of dictators and have kept a republican form of government ever since.
