Today's Discussion

Can you convert a freestanding LP gas grill to a built-in grill?
The house already has a place for a built-in grill (the one that was there appears to have been ripped out) and we have two freestanding grills already. Is it possible to disassemble one of these and install it as a built-in grill? If anyone has done this, what problems did you run into, if any? And any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

A grill is as simple as burners, a regulator, a manifold and a propane tank........and a grill. If you have the 2 units already, then just make sure you tighten up your connections with a good pipe dope and you'll be fine. All you're doing is removing the body or housing of the unit. You may need some 3/8 tubing (or whatever size its using already) to extend your lines to where you want them. Make sure your manifold and all connections are leak free using a soap/water solution. Once you have the unit taken apart you'll have a better idea of whats involved, but for the most part its easy. Burners are interchangeable and dictate your btu's so if its a large opening you may want to go with a larger burner. Believe it or not, you can buy all the material right at home depot. The temp control valves on the front of your old grill should be reused if possible, but if they're junk you can pick up globe valves rated for gas and install those (probably have to rebuild the manifold). It can be done, I built a large natural gas one out of landscaping stones and it works great. good luck and be careful.

“With gas grills, it helps to have a smoker box,” said Purviance, a Culinary Institute of America graduate, James Beard Award nominee, food writer and frequent guest on TV show grilling segments. If your grill lacks a built-in smoker box, don't worry.
