Your wife's answer was just an example of someone using the word "gay" to say dumb. Like "That shirt is gay." It has not been tagged as gay colors. Your wife just thinks using a type of sexuality as a derogatory term is more effective than saying "dumb." If any color, purple is the one that is associated with homosexuality because it has been used to represent gay pride.

If you were offended by her statement, then maybe your wife is only saying that to pick on your sensibilities. I think that it is probably both her insecurity and a knowledge of your own sensitivity to this subject making her say this. Another thing about color choice with regards to sexuality is that everyone is prejudiced, and men in general tend to be color blind more often than women. In other words, your ability to even be able to choose a color may be what she's actually feeling some prejudice against, and I would even suggest that she's trying to "control" your choices by making a criticism. There is no international association of artists out there that is declaring certain color combination choices as legitimate red flags for being homosexual or heterosexual. Let her know that you are sure of this. And if I were you, I'd just help her through her confusion by reiterating to your wife that you are indeed not gay, if that is the case.

First of all, being gay is nothing to be ashamed of- i am myself straight. Second of all, your wife is just as all of women, she wants to tease you or it's just her way of expressing her feelings. Finally, it goes back to the culture your wife is coming from, meaning that Americans, for instance, like to address any object, action or behaviour that they don't like by saying it's gay-taking into consideration that your wife 95% might be American. In my culture, we do not call anything gay unless it is really some homosexual. When we want to describe something in the same context as gay, we SIMPLY say "it does not look good on you" or "it's kind of a girly colour" Overall your wife just does not know how to give a give constructive criticism and tends to take shortcuts (calling things gay) to express how she feels.
