Today's Discussion

When can I start feeding my son Gerber baby food?
When can I start on the Gerber foods like cereals and oatmeals? And how much can I give him? Then when can I start on the baby food in a jar, and how much and what types are best to give him?

at 4 1/2 months you want to start feeding him just rice mixed with formula & water , around bed time ( itll help him sleep longer ) ay 5 1/2 months you start you veggies ! when you have done all the veggies do you fruits at 6 months you can start meat . i dont use oatmeal but you could use it as a bead-fast for him , maybe mix it with some bananas or apples - but not until you have already started him on solids ! my 8 month old eats lunch & dinner , which is normally 2 3oz things for each !

you can start anywhere from 4 - 6 months, for the oatmeal & baby food (mashed) you can start weaning him at around four or five months whenever your most comfortable. At six or seven months you can try the cereals and stuff, he should have some teeth to help him chew. And you can break the cereal in half so it's easy start in small amounts and gradually get bigger portions. Hope this helps! :)

"Health experts and breastfeeding experts agree that it's best to wait until your baby is around six months old before offering solid foods. There has been a large amount of research on this in the recent past, and most health organizations have updated their recommendations to agree with current research. Unfortunately, many health care providers are not up to date in what they're telling parents, and many, many books are not up to date. The following organizations recommend that all babies be exclusively breastfed (no cereal, juice or any other foods) for the first 6 months of life (not the first 4-6 months): World Health Organization UNICEF US Department of Health & Human Services American Academy of Pediatrics American Academy of Family Physicians American Dietetic Association Australian National Health and Medical Research Council Royal Australian College of General Practitioners Health Canada" You can start your baby on jarred food, or just mash up your on table food with some water, breastmilk, or formula. There is no need to start with cereal or oatmeal first- some babies love it, some wont touch it. Aside from cereal, you can use vegetables and fruits (except grapes) to feed your baby, and you can introduce meats whenever you wish to- or don't wish to. Some mothers introduce pureed meats at about 7-8 months, others wait until their baby is old enough to eat solid meat without pureeing it. Your baby should start with 0.5oz, or 1 tablespoon, of food a day at 6 months, which you can increase to 2 0.5 ounce feedings at 7 months, and so on. Once they start grasping and chewing solid food you don't have to worry about the amount as long as they are getting enough (at least 20oz a day, or enough feedings to reasonably produce that with breastmilk) of breastmilk or formula.

It is recommended to wait till six months to introduce any solids (including rice cereal) but some people start earlier than that. I started my daughter with a rice cereal when she was 5 and a half months old. It's not good to be in a rush when it comes to introducing solids because a babies digestive system just isn't capable of digesting anything other than formula or breast milk until around six months. Now as for jar baby foods...you can start at six months as well but i would suggest making and freezing your own baby food its soo easy!! because those jars have added salt and preservatives...how else do you think they stay on those shelves so long? All you need to do is buy apples, pears, sweet potatoes whatever you want, peel and dice them, cook them in a little water then blend them...you can store them in ice cube trays and that way you know exactly whats in your babies food :)
