Any tips on the transition to a big girl bed for my Daughter? We are ready to put our 19 month (she will be 2 on Halloween) old daughter into a big girl bed. We are expecting #2 due the end of sept. Our 19 month old is really a climber so we want to get her out of the crib before she hurts herself. What is the best way to make this a smooth transition for both my husband and I and most of all her of course.
Any Tips would be greatly appreciated.
Reply Tina Don't make a big issue of it.Let her pick out her new bedding.Put the crib away for now,so going back into it isn't an option.Get those bed rails for her to prevent falls.
vollballer Well, make sure that you get those bed guard type things. It helps close the bed it on the sides so it makes it hard to climb out. Also, give her some toys so that she is distracted, and won't have the desire to get out of bed.
Lynkainia If you are worried about her falling out or she feels exposed in the new environment, they made this net type thing that fits over the side of the bed and has arms that go under the mattress. its only about 6 inches tall so there is not much to climb over, plus there is still the other two sides of the bed if she needs to get out.
Make sure to tell her how proud you are that she is growing up and then tell her that this is an important step into the land of the big girls :)

JAG Put up the new bed in her room for a couple of days before taking down the crib. Let her get used to it and play on it and show her how her dolls/animals can be on it. Make it appealing with whatever bedding she likes - a favorite character or color whatever. She's really little so she might not understand a lot of rules around it but you can say this is your new crib or bed, whatever you call her bed now.
Put up the bedrails (on both sides if it is not against a wall and then don't even mention she has to stay in it. That might turn on the light bulb to 'oh, I can get out?" Just go about your normal bedtime routine .
As an added safety measure, you might want to put a baby gate across her doorway just so she can't wander int he middle of the night.
leejrobinson my little girl was the same so we put her in her single bed and bought a guard rail. we got ours from argos and it is a nice pink colour. put one side of the bed against the wall and the guard at the other side so she cant fall out. our little girl loved her grown up 'princess bed'. (we called it that to make her want to sleep in it as she missed the crib at first).
see below for link to argos website where we got ours from
