There are many different reasons for choosing a log cabin quilt pattern when making a quilt. They are an iconic symbol of America, just like base ball and apple pie.

They are also a sign of simple rustic beauty that many people who live in the country try their best to create when decorating their homes.

Quilts are also a big symbol of American craftsmanship, and there are many fairs and shows that have large and grand displays of many quilt patterns, with log cabin designs right at the top of the most popular.

You can find many different kinds of patterns for country decorating, and there are many books on the subject. You can find traditional cabin patterns, as well as more contemporary modern styles to choose from.

There are patterns for bed quilts, as well as wall hangings, and they come in many different shapes and sizes, for whatever you may be making them for.

There are many places to find what you are looking for. So if you want to take a leisurely stroll through history, then nothing can do it more than a log cabin quilt pattern.

Today's Discussion

Favorite quilting pattern for a log cabin block quilt?
What is your favorite pattern for quilting on a log cabin block? I will be attempting to hand quilt one, and may also have a pro machine quilt another so I am looking for suggestions in either area. It is a wall hanging, 16 blocks in apparently an arrangement I invented because I can't find it in any books or online. I would love website links to quilting on log cabin blocks. Thanks for your time!!

This site has some interesting log cabin variations. I made the wreaths and Christmas tree this year. And I'm definitely making that navy blue and yellow one with the big star. You can really do so much with the log cabin blocks. Just a matter of what colors and how you turn the block.

If you are hand quilting a log cabin you may want to choose a design that crosses as few seams as possible. If the "logs" are relatively wide you (or a machine quilter) can do designs (leaves, hearts, whatever) within the logs. Using a longarm opens up lots of possibillities that may be a pain to do by hand. Diagonal lines across the blocks or even wreaths or spirals to "soften" the angles in the blocks are all effective. If you want to emphasize your special layout then you can stitch right alongside your seam lines (stitch in the ditch). There are so many websites that show log cabins and variations, but sites that show different quilting options just aren't as common. :o( There are many quilting books that focus on this wonderfully versatile block but I don't know of one that specifically shows different quilting options. Check your local library! If you have quilting friends, belong to a guild, or have a helpful quilt shop nearby, make several photocopies of your layout and ask other quilters' for suggestions!

I like to use triangle designs, one for each half of the block. I usually like a swirly or feather design in the lighter half and more straight-line types in the darker half. Go to www.webshots.com and search for log cabin quilts. I'm sure there are hundreds.

Eleanor Burns has the easiest pattern! her book is extremely detailed and she gives you so many variations. it's super easy for a beginner. or if you are a pro, you'll have it done in no time.
