Today's Discussion

What is the best baby shower gift you received and why?
We are having a baby shower and I was looking for something special or unusual (not a hamper or car seat). Any thoughts would be appreciated.

a bundle of diapers and stuff that you actually use for the baby. like diaper rash cream, gas drops and stuff like that!

At my baby shower I actually received a mommy/daddy care kit from my sister in law. There was Tylenol, bath stuff, etc... It was so nice and personal. I was glad she did this for us. Because you never should forget the parents. They are the ones that are gonna have the headaches and stuff. So now at all the baby showers I go to I always buy the baby something nice and then pack something together for the parents.

i recived many of the gifts off my registry but some of the more unique items I recieved were a baby bracelet with the babies name on it (he wore it for his christening), David Katz (i think thats how its spelled) A fathers lullaby CD (found at Amazon)(really nice jazzy music), a homemade knit baby blanket, an handkerchief made into a baby bonnet for the christening and then snipped back into a hankey for the wedding day.(something old), books with a written mesage inside, a nice baby record book.

Diapers.... because they're so expensive.

I myself received a beautiful robe. It is a plush mint green. and was large enough to wrap up in. I was touched that someone thought of "ME" after 5 months of the baby this the baby that. It's normal to get a little blue and for everyone to just assume you are fine. Your hormones and emotions are a wreck during this time and you sometimes feel like WHAT ABOUT ME? After I had my baby we would cuddle up together with the robe and read books, feed ect. and she loved my robe because it was a soft as a blanket. I always felt better wrapped in it also. I still have it though it looks about like my daughters baby blanket now. I could not get rid of it no more than I could get rid of her blankie.

The best thing that I have that I absolutely wished I had since day one was a baby carrier. There are a lot baby carriers that are suited for newborns and for big babies. I had a baby bjorn but it wasn't that great. So, if I were you, I would research all the different kinds of baby carriers and baby wraps and list it in your baby shower. Good luck!

i think a boppy pillow is a wonderful gift. i used mine, still do...my babies are 7 months(twins) and love their boppy pillows. they are great for breastfeeding, tummy time for babies, helps to prop them... also, a very unique gift and also a great help to mom is a bumbo baby seat (prince lionheart also makes them now, called bebePOD)they are these soft, comfortable seats that help babies sit up. they won't tip over, and you can start using them as soon as baby can hold his neck up, i think they say from about 8 weeks...the only prob. w/the bumbo seat is my baby boy at 4 months started trying to get out of it...but my daughter still uses it and is just fine...

My best gift was from my mother in law. Our son was born a month early by emergency c-section and we hadn't bought a crib yet. She flew up from 2 states away and took us shopping for her first grandsons baby shower gifts. Before he was born I had been looking at cribs at Walmart for like $120 or so. Well she said her grandson couldnt sleep in a crib from walmart so she took us out and bought him a $500 crib, $120 mattress, $250 bedding set, and a $250 stroller/carseat combo. I was in shock and I still stand back in awe of his crib. It is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen! My husband and I were like "Wow, his crib mattress cost more than our queen mattress! And his crib cost more than our extra car!" (my husband bought a cheap $100 car for emergencies) I guess having a mother in law who is picky about every thing and has to have the best of every thing is a good thing when it comes to my son! A cheaper gift that I got and was one of my favorites was a baby calendar. It is like a baby book but a calendar. Each month you fill out the dates (because you dont start with January, you start with the month he is born), then where a picture would normally be on each page of the calendar it has things that you fill out, like the first month has "My Name Is____________" "I was born on________" and stuff like that. Then where the dates are on the page you can put stickers like "first doctors appt" "ate solids" "first smile" and stuff like that. I loved it because I could look through it later and see what he did each month. Plus every month had differnent things to fill out on the top part of the calendar. Some would say "My mom loves to sing these songs to me____________" "When my daddy first saw me he felt_______________" and all sorts of stuff like that. Now that my son is 6 it is so easy to look back and see when his first tooth was and all that. With the baby book I would have to flip through and find the page, and with his journal (I keep a journal for both of my children, started when I was pregnant) it would take me forever to find some thing, they are like books! Good Luck finding a gift.

Baby shower gift that was the best. BIG Stack of paper plates, pastic cups, plastic forks and a gift certificate for a catering place that prepares individual meals *even delivers* (Like Fancy TV Dinners). Tasty food and no mess for two weeks.

A HUGE pack of size 1 diapers!! My sisters had a pamper party, I got baby wash, lotion, wipes, diaper cream and diapers- I was set for the first 3 months+! It was such a blessing!!! OH< also, check out kangarookorner.com, they have the most awesome fleece slings!!! My son is 6 months old now and I carry him all over town in it, it is sooo comfortable for baby AND parent. Really, everywhere I go people comment on how comfy he looks in it and they all ask me where I got it. I wish someone would have got it for me as a shower gift, but I bought it myself. Seriously-this is the BEST thing to get a new parent!!! All other carriers do not compare and A lot of people don't know about these!!!

A keep sake box it was silver with different compartments and a place for the birth certificate and pictures. I liked it because it was beautiful and handy

I had twins and the best gifts that I got were gift cards (so that I could pick out what I wanted for the babies), diapers (NO explanation needed), and the absolute best was a hand-made cradle that one of my dad's life long friends made. It was simply made but it meant the world that he made it himself. The best gift I ever gave, according to a mother, was a baby afghan that I crocheted myself.

Two GOOD baby shower GIFT IDEAS: You can get her a wicker basket at Wal-mart for $3 and fill it with baby Johnson & Johnson products, wipies & a package of Newborn Pampers or anything you can think of to fill it. Most of these products go on sale from time to time at HEB or your local stores...just look out for those sales if you have time. Also, at the baby sales section you can find lots of little things you can put in it. Then wrap it with see through plastic (like the Easter Baskets have) & tie it with ribbon on top & put a bow on it. You can also add about 3 helium balloons. They are a big hit at the showers I attend/throw & everyone now looks forward to that gift!! (These average from $25-$50.) A personalized diaper cake. They are really easy to make. (If I can do it, you can to!!) Here’s a helpful link that I used. (I did the Diaper Cake Type A in a Precious Moment theme which the mommy-to-be had picked out. Big hit to!!) You can either make it a Generic “Baby” theme or find out the mommy-to-be’s theme & add some of those little items to it. (These average from $15-$25.) Have fun! ;o)
