Design

Rugs come in a variety of design and patterns.  They don't affect the costs though so it would all boil down to your own personal preference.  

One tip though, you might want to go for a more down-played pattern as they are more pleasing and calming to the eyes.  

This is especially necessary if you wish to use it in your bedroom, a place where you would need all the calm and relaxation you can get.

Fringes

Another factor you would want to consider is whether a fringed carpet works for you.  Fringed or not fringed, good rugs would have the necessary protection at the edges.  The choice you make would then be based on your personal preference.

Machine-Made or Handmade

Rule of thumb is, handmade carpets are more durable and are of superior quality compared to machine-made ones. They are more expensive though.
