Porter Cable tools are good tools but you don't have to restrict yourself to one brand name. I probably have at least one tool from every major manufacturer in my shop. I buy my tools based on comfort of use first and brand name second.

It is not necessary to have all the tools in your shop the same brand. Hand saws are a specialty as are good hammers, nail pullers, cutters and especially files and saw blades. Look for the best makers of each tool and enjoy your home maintenance jobs.

Every tool has one manufacturer that makes it better than anyone else. Porter-Cable makes the best routers, belt sanders, and palm sanders. Bosch makes the best jigsaws and hammer drills. Milwaukee makes the best Sawzalls. Panasonic makes the best cordless drills. Don't restrict yourself to one brand, do some research and make your decision based on that. Feel free to contact me if I can answer any questions. Good luck.

No it doesn't matter. You will want to check reviews of tools before you buy them. Comparison shop and get the highest quality you can afford. I make sure that I buy professional grade tools rather than consumer grade if I plan to keep the tool forever and use it a lot. Most companies make both types, and their consumer grade stuff is usually cheep, flimsy, and won't hold up. This is true for every one...festool, dewalt, porter cable, delta. I would recommend staying away form black and decker, craftsman, and other store brand tools. They are cheep and will disappoint you.

For home repair, you do not need all high priced tools. To me, the best tools are the ones that feel good when you pick them up and use them. For work (being a Plumber), I buy the best, but for home general repairs, I have a combination of cheap and expensive tools. Why have a $200 tool that gets used once a year or less?

It would be hard for me because I made some of the tools myself like the big disc sander out of a sump pump, the big table on the drill press is home made like the table for the "chop saw" I have also learned that sometimes a cheap tool will work as good as an expensive one, depending how you use it and how much.

For general home improvement you'll probably want a variety of tools both brand name and quality. I'm an oil burner technician by trade and also used to do a lot of small plumbing repairs. For anything I use a lot I buy quality, i.e. wrenches, pipe wrenches, allen keys, etc. Something I may only use once or twice I buy Dollar store or bargain bin.
