Radio Antenna? The stereo in my living room gets no AM/FM reception whatsoever. What's a good, cheap antenna that will work the best to get me AM and FM reception. Internet searches and reviews are all about HDTV antennas. All I want is a simple AM and FM, indoor antenna that works.
I have tried two store-bought RCA antennas that don't work. One of those cases where you finally get reception, then you move your hand away from the antenna and the reception fades to static.
Reply Bob Just go to Radio Shack and look around I'm sure they have something for you.
TIMOTHY D L A simple two wires make a good antenna. Loop antennas are really cheap. All the chain stores sell cheap antennas
Harry C Reception, AM, vs FM, this usually requires two antennas, although one can be made to work. As in a car radio. It usually isn't optimum for either Radio band.
For an AM radio antenna, all you really need is a pice of wire that is ungrounded, and a good ground on your radio. This wire should be connected to one of the AM terminals on the back of the radio, the other connection needs to be grounded, the Ground terminal should have what looks like a dashed arrow pointing down.

-There may be an antenna trim pot, (a small screwdriver adjustment) on the back of the radio to match the radio to the antenna.

For an FM radio what is supposed to work best would be what is called a Folded Dipole, in layman terms a pice of 300 ohm television wire, (not Cable). You can pick up one of these at Radio Shack, any salesman with any kind of electronics background will be able to help you there.
Back in the 70s and 80s these antennas were built into the windshild of a few american cars, They worked well until you made a turn. You could see two wires coming up the windshield inside the glass and then bending at the top to the left and right like a big T.
It needs to be connected to your radio on the FM terminals on the back of your Radio. The antenna will usually have two fork like terminals on one of it's three ends.It dosn't matter which one goes to which terminal.
I hope this solves your problem.
sparkie Don't worry! The antennas for AM and FM are very easy to construct!
First FM: Take three (3) meters of insulated conductor and turn it in a round fashion, then with their extremes in the center (one against the other) put out 0.75 meters at each side and use tape to fix the two conductors side by side until you get a half wave dipole. Next connect the two extremes to the 300 Ohms input in your receiver and ready! you can rotate the antenna until it give you the best signal.
Second AM: Put on the AM antenna input a long, long insulated conductor (the longer, the best, maybe more than 30 meters) and no more it's needed because the AM input it's of high impedance and the low frequency of the signals make almost impossible to use an antenna with 1/4 wave dipole.
Brad M In order for an antenna to work properly it needs to have the right impedance. A lot of devices will have this rating printed beside the antenna jack. Your best bet is to make one.
