A repairman said it's cheaper to buy a reconditioned air conditioner at $800 than to replace the compressor at $1400 (possibly $1700 if the 3-way valve needs to be replaced). I am referring to an 2.5 ton outdoor unit, not the window kind. What places offer these and what is the price range. Trane is preferred, but not an absolute requirement.
