How can I get an honest appraisal on my silver flatware?
I want to sell my silver flatware. It's old and of the Reed & Barton brand. I have a silver set and a silver plated set. The silver set has 61 pieces and the silver plated set has 43 pieces. Does anyone have a ballpark of what it could be worth? Does anyone know where or how I can get an honest appraisal? where would I get the most money for it online, jewelry store, etc?

take it to 5 pawn shops for wholesale value. Take it to 5 fine silverware shops for appraisals. throw out bottom and top ones average the middle 3 = actual value.

I can answer this because I've been down the same path. You can expect between $50 and $150 for the silver plated set. If the set is unused and the box in mint condition you can get more. The solid silver set has it's worth in its silver melt content. For 61 pieces, probably around $1000 - $2000. More if is cased in a lovely wooden box. Sadly noone really buys silverware to use, its not recommended to be washed in dishwashers and does require regular cleaning. And if like mine its in a huge box, you have to find somewhere to store it. Mine doesnt fit in any cupboard so it has to live under a table! Silver sells on eBay but of course unless the buyer is local, shipping starts getting very expensive because of its weight. You can only enquire a a regular auction house. Their selling fees are much higher than eBays but it's sold and gone, no more worries on your part. I sold my silver plated set for $150 but it was brand new, never used. Still had all the wrappers on each piece. Good luck.
