Today's Discussion

Where is a good place to sell text books?
I have text books I have been trying to sell for over a year. They are less than half the buying cost but they just don't seem to move. I have them posted on Amazon but no one has bought them so now I am looking for other places to list.

Deal Oz and Bigwords.com list many places along with buyback quotes.

Remember that textbooks are most likely to see at the beginning of the quarter/semester, when students need new books. You're unlikely to be able to sell them in March since the quarter/semester is already well underway. It's probably not worthwhile to put a lot of effort into selling them until later in the summer, to catch the students who are starting the fall quarter/semester. The ability to sell of your books also depends on what condition they're in. If you're the sort of person who write in the books or highlights them, your books are going to be very hard to sell. If the books are beaten up, have food/drink stains, or are written in, it's unlikely that you'll be able to sell them at all. Even if your books are in gread condition, a lot of textbooks are really hard to sell, especially if they are books that get updated frequently. If the book that you're trying to sell has been updated, your chances of getting any money for it at all is pretty low -- most students don't want to risk having an old edition that is outdated and doesn't have the information that their professors are referring to. If your book is not the current edition, your purchase price is meaningless, and you shouldn't expect to get more than 10% of your original purchase price. If you live in a college town, check the local college bookstores to see if they'll buy back your books. You can also put up signs on bulletin boards around campus to see if anyone will buy your books that way. Make sure that you check to make sure that your book is one that's used at that college. For lower-level courses, you can just cruise the bookshelves at the campus bookstore to see if they have it. For upper-level courses that don't get offered very frequently, you might need to do this a couple of times to see if your book is still used. Used bookstores are generally pretty loathe to bother with old textbooks, since they don't sell very well. You can try, but don't expect to get a lot of money for them if they'll take them at all. If you're in a city with an active craigslist, you can try to list them there -- it's free, so you don't have anything to lose. There are a few websites that you can try to list your books on, but I haven't tried any of them myself so I can't recommend any in particular. I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader to type 'sell old textbooks' or something similar into their search engine of choice. Sorry, but there's no secret to selling old textbooks that will help you recover the original cost of the textbook. :(

I would put flyers at a nearby college campus and hope the professors are still using the same edition. Thus, a student may buy directly from you cutting out the middlemen (college bookstore) which generally adds a hefty markup. You will get more and the student buying will save a few bucks as well. Win-win situation). Posting them on E-Bay or other auction sites is another option. Also, there are companies that buy textbooks. Try a search on google. One company will even send shipping box and label to you so you can mail them for free: FacultyBooks.com One ethical probe: If you have received a complimentary or a review copy, be fair to the publisher(s) and author(s) and don't make money selling your free copy. Donate it to a library. You will feel good and take a tax write-off as your reward!

I have used half.com for my textbooks, my dad's, and my boyfriend's. My textbooks have been current ones, but the ones I sold for my dad and boyfriend have been older books that I really didn't think would ever sell. In less than 24 hours after posting my first books on half.com I had already made three sales. Half.com is quick and easy. Their commission fees are fair, and they reimburse you for shipping (whether it costs more or less than you actually paid for shipping- but it's always right there around the same price).

ebay tried to shut down half.com at one point - but half.com has emerged as the superstar in textbook selling - so they kept it alive. i sold text books for about two years and noticed that once they come up with a new edition they are extremely difficult to sell. good luck, - holger

Amazon is the best place to sell books if you have them priced right and still can not sell them i do not think you will be able to sell them anywhere. Maybe you should try selling your books to online buyback company they will pay to you for your books and will resell them. You can get a quote for your books on this website Hope it helps!

I've been lucky selling here on Amazon.com, actually the first thing I ever sold was a text book on Amazon.com. But if you're not having luck here, I guess you should try either, Barnes and Nobles or Half.com...
