Today's Discussion

Do those single serve coffee machines have a hot plate?
I'm thinking of getting one for my dorm, but we're not allowed to have hot plates, or things with hot plates. These are the coffee machines where the coffee brews directly into a mug. I don't mean a detatchable hot plate, the regular coffee makers I've seen heats the pot from the bottom. This coffee machine doesn't have pods, it has a permanent filter for any kind of coffee and can also be used for soup.

no, the ones I have seen do not have a hot plate. With only one serving they figure it will be consumed right away.

No but a lot of regular coffee makers don't have hot plates and they are a much better deal since you're not locked into one brand of coffee like you are with the pods.

There are some single serve coffee machine that pours the coffee right into a mug without the mug really touching the coffee machine meaning there is no hot plate. And why can't you have hot plates?

Neither the Pod brewers, Keurig K-Cup brewers or Tassimo T-Disc brewers utilize a hot plate and would be perfectly suitable for your dorm room. All of them have an internal heating element to heat the water, but brew directly into a mug. Which model you choose depend on your preferences and whether you are looking for just straight coffee or also coffee house style drinks like lattes or cappucinos. I would suggest a visit to the Single Serve Coffee forums to learn and read more.

I've included a link below to a coffee maker I found. It doesn't appear to have a hot plate, however the price is off the charts. I'd check your local Walmart, Target, Caldors, K-Mart or whatever comparable store you have in your area. There's got to be a single serve cofffee maker out there without a hot plate on it for a reasonable price and many stores are now running "back to school" sales. You should also try flavored coffee...so many different flavors for whatever your mood may be. Good luck with school.
